Founded in 2008, Critic’s Notebook is an independent publication devoted to film, arts, entertainment, and culture. Our contributors have reported from major festivals including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Sundance, Toronto, SXSW, New York, London, Edinburgh, and Tribeca, and our writers have gone on to publish work in newspapers, magazines, and digital outlets around the world.
We welcome pitches and applications from thoughtful, passionate writers with a strong interest in criticism, journalism, and cultural commentary. While film remains our primary focus, we are also interested in essays and reporting on the broader worlds of arts and culture.
Writers at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Students and emerging critics are welcome, as are experienced journalists, scholars, and editors. Familiarity with A.P. style and prior publishing experience are helpful but not required.
At present, Critic’s Notebook operates as an independent publication and is unable to offer compensation. Contributors retain the copyright to their work. We ask only for the non-exclusive right to publish the material on Critic’s Notebook. Authors remain free to revise, expand, republish, or place their work elsewhere, subject to any agreements they may enter into with subsequent publishers.
We are also interested in hearing from prospective editors who can assist with copy editing, fact-checking, and editorial development.
